Michael Siaw, the Kumasi Asante Kotoko fan who was beaten up in the stands of the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday has said that he did not know that the person he was celebrating in front of was a professional boxer.
The incident happened at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday during Ghana’s biggest football clash between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
Mr Allotey was captured in a viral video delivering three quick stiff jabs to the face of the fan, whose name has been given as Michael Siaw.
Speaking to Kumasi based Oyerepa FM, Mr Siaw said he was just celebrating when his team, Kotoko scored contrary to local reports that he provoked the boxer.
“I didn’t even know he was a boxer, it was after the video went viral that I got to know,” he said.
“Sincerely I did nothing to merit such an assault from him. I was only jubilating when Kotoko scored. He approached me to leave his presence and before I realised, he had me,” he added.
He also revealed that he has reported the matter to the police but the boxer and his representatives have been begging for an amicable settlement.
“His manager and family members have been asking that I withdraw the case so we settle it amicably but I’m yet to meet my dad so we decide,” he said.
The fan sustained a gash under his left eye which had to be stitched.
Mr Allotey could lose his boxing license as part of sanctions from Ghana Boxing Authority and other global boxing organisations if the matter escalates.
