After the incident of fire destroying parts of the Electoral Commission’s Greater Accra Regional office, there has been continuous trend of fire damaging homes and leaving firefighters homeless.
Over 100 kiosks which serve as shelter for some squatters have been burnt to ashes with the squatters struggling to salvage their goods at Shiashie in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in Accra and Kingston Avenue at the Takoradi Market Circle destroying about five stores.
According to an eyewitness account, the fire spread to other kiosks quickly because they were too close to each other.
“I can say its about 100 kiosks. There’s no interval in between the kiosks thus causing the fire to spread faster. Those in the kiosks all came out when they saw the fire. I think it started in one of the kiosks and extended to other parts” he said.
The Public Relations Officer of the Western Regional Fire Service, DO3 Emma Bonney told Citi News several groceries were destroyed in the fire-outbreak which took five hours before it was finally put under control.
He said, they deployed about seven fire tenders before they were able to bring the inferno under control.
It is currently unclear what triggered both fires.
