The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was stopped from visiting Yana Abubakari Mahama in Yendi due to an Akwasidae festival, it has been revealed.
According to the Asantehene, he had planned in advance to visit the Dagbon overlord in the Northern Region but he was forced to relinquish his ambition at the eleventh hour.
“I learnt there was a Damba festival in Dagbon recently and it was my wish and plan to visit Yana Abubakari Mahama so I can take part in the festival but I couldn’t make it.
“Unfortunately, the Damba festival coincided with an Akwasidae festival and that prevented me at the last minute from travelling to Yendi”, Otumfuo said.
The Asantehene, however, stated that his desire to travel to Yendi anytime soon still holds, saying that it wouldn’t be too long for him to step foot in the Dagbon Kingdom.
“I will still travel to Gbewa palace and fraternise with Yana and his people in the coming weeks or months”, Otumfuo, who was seated in state during a durbar, promised.
He was speaking when Yana and his elders stormed the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi to give thanks to Otumfuo for his efforts to restore peace in the Dagbon kingdom.
The Asantehene led a committee of eminent chiefs, put together by former President Kufuor in 2003, to help restore peace in Dagbon after 16 years of dialogue.
